50 Year Summary
After SRHS grad I took a year off then completed the 3 yr. RN Nursing Diploma Program In Saint John, NB. at St. Joseph’s Hospital (1967-1970). After grad I worked with a classmate for 2 years (1970-1972) at the former Saint John General Hospital on the Pediatrics/Youth ward. I decided along with my classmate to join Medical Services, Manitoba Region and head west, arriving in Winnipeg mid winter on what we thought was the coldest day we’d ever experienced. After the week long initiation and training, we were sent to Peguis First Nation, working at the Fisher River Indian Hospital for two months. At that time we were selected among 6 nurses to be part of a 6 month ‘Clinical Training of Nurses for Northern Medical Services’ through the University of Manitoba. I was sent to Nelson House for the first 2 months and my friend to another location. We finished the remaining 4 months in Winnipeg along with Medical students at various hospitals, learning all about our job requirements in all aspects of medical care which we would be carrying out at our postings. I was posted to Cross Lake. It was here I met my husband Christian (a teacher). And during that time I filled in for vacation relief at South Indian Lake. What an adventure! But I’ll leave the rest of the stories for my book I’m hoping to finish within the next year.
Chris and I were married in Saint John, NB in Oct.1973, then both of us were posted at God’s Lake Narrows, MB for two years. We moved to NB to live and work in Perth-Andover till 1978, then moved back to Manitoba, to Peguis First Nations for 6 years where I worked part time as a Community Health Nurse and part time at the local hospital also completing a Nursing Administration Program while at Peguis.
We moved to Winnipeg in 1984 where we continued our careers in Nursing and teaching. I continued to work part time terms at 3 different hospitals and two community based health care facilities; Riverview Health Centre and St. Amant Centre, retiring in 2014 after 44 years of nursing.
I ran a dressmaking business from my home for nearly 15 years doing bridal wear, costumes, and sewing all the dancewear for my daughters ballet school.
We raised 4 children, now all married: Rosalie (Todd), recently married, Peter(Christine) Children: Miranda (5) & Mathys (4) (all living in BC), Michelle (Andrew) Children: Alexa (4), Alia (3) & Alyssa (1), and Timothy (Elizabeth) children:Charlie (9) & Abigail (6). The grandchildren delight us and keep us busy. I’ve retired but sometimes feel more tired than retired.
I look forward to my homecoming with family and celebrating with former classmates at our reunion. It should be a fun event.
